Every time i walk through one of these entry “halls”, i shortly gasp upon the architectural raffishness and simple enormous size of the buildings, yesterday I told my friend, “Dude, in Germany you would find the Government or the Museum of Modern Art in such a building, but not…a normal school!” (in this case the Nanyang Polytec)… For everybody who’s not local it quickly becomes obvious upon just walking by those bodies of education how much the Singaporean government is willing to invest in their own future in form of human potential.Thumbs Up here!
However, the question that remains is, “Do you get another Albert Einstein by simply placing his students in the most expensive laboratory?” Singapore has a very confusing way of presenting its qualities through talent and education, because while i have to answer the first question with “No“, there is no doubt that “Do i get another Anna Netrebko by simply placing a singer on a most impressive stage?” in Singapore, can be answered with…”Sometimes..yes“!
Wow – Singapore Voices
Since my arrival in Singapore i was impressed with every single concert/dancing competition or event organized by the local universities/schools. There is an overall professionalism you will rarely find anywhere else in the world, which makes the evenings in most cases very enjoyable event and nice alternative to the “normal” nights…
NYP – Orion 2008 – The Event
Yesterday i was lucky enough to get invited by two of my best friends here in Singapore to this years Polytec Singing Competition (Orion 2008). The event is hold yearly and is the final competition of previous castings, leaving a group of approx 15 people out of a original 300 to compete in 3 categories, which are “Duet”, “Young Composer” and “Solo”.
I have to admit that my level of perception to these events was set very high by Singapore itself, so what i faced this evening left me in a state of astonishment and somehow still happiness inside, about having realized that Singapore isnt as perfect as it wishes it would be.
The Singers
I very rarely have seen so many talented singers as in Singapore, and i didnt get disappointed this evening either. Very very nice!
The Location
As exceptionable as the singers, in Europe some concert halls would be happy to be equipped like the average school concert hall is here.
The Crowd
Well, it was full house but all the shouting and (meant to be funny) comments were a bit too many in the end
The Conclusion
The Winner of the Solo competition is questionable, the amusement factor was high, so was the quality of the voices. Overall a nice evening. Tickets are usually free or very cheap, and as mentioned before a very nice alternative to the “normal” evening program.
