The Singapore MRT is a paradise for every zoologist and sociologist. A wild nearly untouched territory of colorful species batteling for survival. And to prepare you for the best possible experience, we will introduce the most interesting appearances in our new series
“Singapores Real Zoo – MRTs Unexplored Species”
Today we start with:
The Pole Leaner
The general Singaporean “Pole Leaner”, as we can encounter it in Singapores MRT territory these days, belongs to the species of “Singaporus Laziness” and is a very heedless type of being. Mostly the “Pole Leaner” will be a maverick in his territory and can only seldom found in larger groups. This is due to the relatively small amount of available poles.

The “Pole Leaner” is active throughout the whole day and night, although you will have higher chances of spotting one in the wild during rush hours when the general seating opportunities will be occopied by other interesting species. The pole leaner becomes active when there is no free seat and at least one unoccupied pole in nearby reach of it.
Characteristics and Dangers
The characteristics of the pole leaner are to be defined as reckless, lazy and inattentivaley.
When the “Pole Leaner” spots a free pole, he will slowly proceed in its direction, and instead of then grabbing the pole to stabilize his standing position during the train ride, it will lean against it, and making it useless for the other species in the train wagon. The “Pole Leaner” will not change its position until reaching his destination, neither for older passengers nor for pregnent or people in need.
Defeat The “Pole Leaner” In 5 Steps
Over years scientists have evolved one tactic that can be used in seperating the pole leaner from his pole before it reaches its destination. The tactics details following here:
- In case of the trains slowly departure, after having stopped at a station, the pole leaner, through laws of gravity, will usually be forced to lean less powerful against the pole or even creating a small gap between his body and the pole for the time of quick acceleration
- Slip your hand on to the pole during this short timeframe AND hold tight to the pole. Having accomplished this, you successfully completed stage 1 of the operation
- Stage 2 will finally force the pole leaner to give up his pole. To complete this stage, you need to turn your pole holding hand to the position, that your knuckles will face/touch the pole leaners part that is leaning on to the pole. Now slowly but steady emerge your knuckles further into the direction of the leaning body part
- The Pole Leaner will encounter a unpleasent feeling at one point and usually will either, because he realizes his wrongly doings, or because of his general uncomfortbable feeling seperate from the pole
- Congratulations!

I jerk my knuckles out all the time! hahaha by pretending I stumbled, and thus my wrist moved.

I’ve only been here for 4 months and I have already adopted the bad habits of the “pole leaner” without even realising it.
However; I have simultaneously been working on my “freestanding skateboarding like” skills; allowing me to move away from the “training wheel” pole….
