How To Survive Valentines Day In Singapore During The Financial Crisis

A Bed Full Of Roses? Bullshit, imagine how much that would hurt.

Its this time of year where Singapore transforms into one big heart shaped island, pink and Bordeaux red replace the National colors, the shop uncles in China town change their catch line to “Ah, Niceee, Valentines shopping, all cheap, cancan”.. and everybody (even the Money changers at Raffles Place) have their “Valentines Day Promotion” running.

You can survive!

Its a time to show your loved one how much you love her and spend some loving money on lovely things making the shop owners love you and you loving your credit card. Everybody loves everyone and everything! Its Valentines Day In Singapore!

However, if you are bored by the annual red roses, chocolates and cinema ticket… continue reading, I have some secret advice, on how to make this Valentines Day in Singapore special while spending even less then last year…

Don’t Write The Usual Love Letter…

write two. Just kidding. But who doesn’t know the feeling when buying one of these Hallmark cards with nice shiny hearts bouncing up and down on the front and some romantic quote of a random semi famous guy on the inside. Exactly. Boring.

Instead, head over to any SingPost outlet or the Singapore Philatelic Museum and get a sheet of custom made stamps of both of you. Dont forget to bring a picture. And once ready, you even still have enough time to post your love note (the boring one) via post to your lady’s office or home with your personal stamp (the exciting one) on top, nice surprise.

Love Letter: 5 – 10 $

Don’t Get Red Roses…

Take your lady by the hand and pay the National Orchid Garden inside the Singapore Botanical Garden a visit. You will enjoy a refreshing walk through Singapore’s green oasis and can easily combine your visit with a nice romantic picnic under some secluded tree, bring a blanket, champagne and some nice snacks and spend some quality time this Valentines Day in Singapore together, surrounded by flowers, nature and relatively fresh air.

Red Roses: At least 30$

Don’t Get The Boring Box Of Chocolate…

No woman feels complete without her obligatory heart shaped box of chocolates. Chocolate is said to have an aphrodisiac effect, making you happy and horny, so this is obviously a point where you shouldn’t put on the red marker and the saving gloves. Invest! :)

But to spare your lady the usual box, make it special this Valentines Day. Go to the chocolate buffet, THE chocolate buffet.

The Fullerton Hotel offers a splendid, fabulous chocolate buffet within a nice and festive atmosphere, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday (ringring… Valentines Day).
You will be presented a large variety of truffles, chocolate creations, chocolate fondues cakes and fountains. Mix your own hot chocolate or stuff yourself with tons of chocolate glazed fruits.
And make your lady happy!

Don’t Have An Expensive Dinner…

I was quite devastated when I saw the “Valentines Day Promotions” of the more frequented restaurants in Singapore. 400$ for a normal dinner with just an extra glass of Champagne? Bloody Bloodsuckers. Its amazing how barefaced the local chefs ask for double of the normal price, just because its the 14th of February and you are supposed to spread your love and money that day.

Now, what more romantic is a devoted boyfriend of husband, standing in the kitchen and ~~trying~~ cooking Spaghetti Bolognaise for a candle light dinner at home. Put on some nice music, light the candles and safe yourself the waiting time or potential inattention of the busy waiters.

Dinner Out: 200 – 400 $
Dinner Home: 50 – 100 $ (including a bottle of good redwine)
SAVINGS: 100 – 300 $
