“Do not listen to your Travel Guide!”, I shouted to the couple in front of me, in a last desperate attempt to stop them from climbing into the back of the “Boombox Bicycle”.. I failed and never saw them again, but the devilish laughter of the uncle in the front will never really diminish out of my guilty conscience.

Mamma Mia! The first pizza I head in Singapore was more of a crispy Prata with some undefinable mushy toppings. It was more then extremely horrible and triggered yet another long ranting about the general misconception of Western food in Asia, and why to offer it at all, considering given fact of having about 1 million different local and South East Asian cuisines already. Why Pizza in Asia?

We Germans can be very strange at times. Not only when it comes to Birkenstock-Shoes and Sauerkraut (the worst eating-experience ever), but the majority of my travel buddies are checking their future destinations for places serving sausages and German beer, before anything else. Weizenbeer before Ang Kor Wat, and Hofbrau-Haus before Eiffeltower.

Four pairs of widely opened, surprised eyes stare at me this early hot evening somewhere about 3 years ago. After stumbling through the expat and foreign student contaminated scene around the typical clubs and bars, I finally made contact with my (till today) best local friends and the cultural exchange could finally begin.
And obviously I had to catch up quickly with the typical local food habits.

I quit, you quit, we get a one way ticket to Jamaica and start a laid back Beach Bar. You can serve drinks, I will be the Reggae DJ… and together we watch the sun go down over our little own paradise.
Having said that 10 years ago, I managed to do the whole “one way ticket” thing, but I ended up in an office (at least with ocean view) and play with reports now instead of Reggae music. However just for the “feeling”, I sometimes visit one of the view beach bars here in Singapore. Almost there!

Whenever friends call me and leave the good news they would come and visit me soon (which in fact is only a result of their stop-over in Singapore) they usually ask me how long they should plan for Singapore.
My standard reply has been “Three days should be enough” so far, without ever really thinking about it. However, most of them usually decide for the “1-Day-Quickly-Leave-Again-I-am-not-even-allowed-to-chew-Bubble-Gum-here” option.
