Do I Really Have So Much Stuff? I rub my eyes and cant believe that mountain of clothes, shoes, books and DVDs in front of me is the result of 2 years living in Singapore. I’m moving to a new (and much smaller) place today and now I need a quick solution for my “space problem”.

And since this is about your personal belongings, it is probably not a bad option to go with a storage place that has earned its reputation rather then some random warehouse room.

The Most Important Criteria

I made the experience that we will easily overestimate the space we need. I already settled for the smallest Storage Place available until I arrived at the place and realized, I could even grade down one more level, leaving me with the smallest option possible, the locker (which is still only half filled).

An easy way to figure out how much space you will need is to put your thing together in one room, as close as and packed as possible, then simply measure the width, length and height and calculate the approximate Cubic Meters used. (L x W x H)

Length / Period Of Time
Most Storage Places will offer you discounted price plans the longer you decide to store your things. Some may offer you short term storage from 2 weeks onwards, but be prepared to pay more then for the usual standard minimum length of 2 month.

As per my list above you can see that there is at least one storage place in every corner of the Singaporean island. I would really recommend to see this as one of the most important criteria, if you don’t want to spend valuable time just traveling back and forth to your storage place everytime you need something or want to deposit something. If you have figured out your preferences for the above 3 Criteria then you can contact all the above Storage Places and ask for a quote. Name your required space, the approx length of your storage and contact the preferred locations directly.

In most cases you will have some hidden costs!

Those are usually taxes (your quotes will exclude those 10 – 17%), insurance coverage for your storage place (which can be between 2$ to 10$ per month, depending on the value) and costs for all other extras like air condition, special locks etc.

My Personal Recommendation

Since I just recently went through the whole above process I can quickly tell you for whom I decided for and why.
My favorite was ExtraStorage at Eunos Link, because they are closest to my place and offered a great deal where you pay only 1 dollar for the first month if you sign for a minimum of 2 month. (I pay 35$ for a 1m x 1.2x x 80cm locker).

In general I send out the quote request and see who answers first, which gives you a good idea of the service you will receive in the future. Their staff was very kind as well and even lend me a free locker for the time being since I had forgotten mine.

Humm, ive not considered storage space before; most probably because i can move stuff over to another house.

This is good links however; it would be more helpful if we can do a general list price breakdown.

I know that the various companies will be happy to oblige in price reductions or promotions. It would help to just have and idea of how much it would cost.

Yes I agree, but they are pretty stiff with giving out price lists, I might send them an inquiry for 1 sample locker and will see what they all come up with…

I disagree with the comment that “your girlfriend’s clothes take over the flat”. That never happens! True story!

ah yes, sorry miss sourpommefrites (i guess you are a miss)… i have been totally wrong and appologize humbly about writing that, haha :)) …. NOT!
